The picture is from 2002. I traveled to Phoenix, AZ and for one week, I flew twice a day at Chandler Aerobatic School in a Great Lakes. A lady friend and I traveled there and stayed for the week with her sister’s family who had a young son that I later learned was passionate about anything to do with airplanes.
One afternoon that I was there, my friend drove her nephew to the airport and before I went to fly, I took him out to see the airplane I would fly and let him sit in the cockpit. He asked many questions and you could see excitement in his eyes.
He had a great day but this was not all. The young man’s father was an Engineer who worked at a nuclear power facility in the area and we were sitting around the kitchen table that evening and the young man came up with a piece of paper and said “Randy, can I show you my idea?” and of course I responded affirmatively. He proudly laid down the paper and said “It is my plan for a Spaceship that operates on Steam”. The mathematician and physicist in me almost wanted to chuckle but I knew THERE WAS A BIGGER PRINCIPLE AT PLAY HERE.
I asked him to describe for me how will you do that. He confidently discussed it and when he was done I simply said “Well, a good start. While you grow your idea, you may find you’ll have to adapt it and develop it as you learn…..but good job on your start”. With a smile he walked back to his room. As he did, his dad looked at me and smiling approvingly said “You were probably a lot nicer than I would have been”. We both smiled.
As we think of our Rising Stars and their development, we can be truthful but let’s always remember to speak “Words of Life” not “Death”. Let’s give a taste of their dream and help them to love the journey towards that dream. Their dreams, adventure and belief in their possibilities are “The Bigger Principle”.
